Activity: Water play

I'm sure there are many of us who are being slow on the blogging from this week due to the lovely weather and wanting to spend time outside instead.
It means some posts have had to be put back until next week but we've had a fab time.
I got a fab bargain this week, i went out for a walk, popped into Asda and came home with a sand and water table for £15! I'm so happy with this as they sell similar ones in ELC for £45, they only had 2 left so i had to get it there and then. It was super easy to put together and also has a lid with it. Its meant to be for ages 3+ but its a great size for Seb and just means we'll get longer usage from it.

So i filled it with some warm water and some toys and let Seb have a play.
He loved it and played for about an hour despite being soaking wet by the end, he loved the stacking cups i put in there and also loved just splashing and dripping water from his hands onto the floor.

I'm pleased with this and i have so many ideas of things to use it for, lets just hope the weather complies!

Booking in

On Friday i had my booking in appointment with the midwife(actually there was 2 of them). Although its less then 2 years since my last booking in appointment the list of questions has grown and this time i had to have a carbon monoxide test which was a new one on me and then had 4 lots of blood taken. They asked about nuchal testing which we had decided to decline which suprised them as they said pretty much everyone has it.
We discussed my previous birth experience and they were asking me questions that i couldn't answer like how dilated did i get etc and couldn't believe i had no idea and due to the nature of Sebs birth they couldn't believe nobody had gone through it with me afterwards. I am going to be having shared care this time around and will have a consultant appoinment at around 20 weeks and he will have all my notes from last time and they've asked me to go through it all with him. I am aiming for a vaginal birth although that depends on the consultant and i may have extra scans later in my pregnancy too.
I have booked in at a different hospital from last time, that was my main worry as i was not happy with the care i had(after Sebs birth) and i knew it would play on my mind.

I am really happy with how this first appointment went and it all feels so much more real now! I have to call the hospital in a couple of days to book our 12 week scan. According to the midwife i am 9 weeks and 1 day today so i shouldn't have to wait too long!

Hormone central

My god i forgot about how your moods change from one minute to the next while pregnant, these hormones have ALOT to answer for!

Phil was on a late shift today so this morning we got up, had a lovely breakfast singing along to a kids nursery rhymes CD. Then i had a shower and suddenly my mood dropped, i didn't want to go out as planned then i started moaning on about the house and what a mess it was(it really wasnt that bad!), it got the point where i was shouting at poor Phil who understandably had no idea what to say and then i started screeching that he was making it worse by not answering me back. Then 5 minutes later i was crying apologising for being awful to him while he cuddled me(probably trying not to laugh).

We never argue really so he was a bit surprised by my outburst and i feel awful about it so i have made a big heart shaped dish of cheesey pasta and i am going to try and keep my mood swings to the minimum for the next few months. Wish me luck!

Palmers Mother and Baby products

I've been meaning to write about Palmers for ages!
Palmers Cocoa Butter is one of my all time favourite products to use on my skin, yes i stray from it but always end up coming back to it in the end, i love the smell and how soft and lovely it makes my skin feel. I've used lots of the Palmers products over the years and have always liked them so when i was pregnant with Seb i was really excited to buy their baby products and want to share them with you are they are a brand i love and have often blogged about on my other blog.

I stocked up on their Bottom Butter and Baby Butter and we have used them from day 1. I love sniffing Seb when he has been moisturised after a bath.

A while ago i was looking for more of their products to try and came across this Lil Face Butter, unfortunatly its not available to buy in this country at the moment but i managed to source some online and we have been using it on Sebs cheeks to protect him from the wind.

A product that is on my to try list is their Nursing Butter, i didn't know about this when i had Seb, but i'm aiming to breastfeed the bump when it arrives so i want to get hold of some. My local Boots don't have it so i think i'll have to order online. I'm going to do a giveaway with some Palmers products in the next week or so so keep your eyes peeled!
Do you use any Palmers products?

***I haven't been contacted to post about this brand, i just wanted to let everyone know about some fab products :)

Mothers day meme

Happy Mothers Day to all you wonderful mums out there!

I've been tagged by Hollybobs in this mothers day meme so thought today would be the perfect time to post it.

Describe Motherhood in three words
Tiring, fun, fulfilling

Does your experience differ from your Mother’s – how?
We had very different births, i was born about 4 hours after labour started with just gas and air.
I was my mums 4th baby so she was quite relaxed with me and i am in turn pretty relaxed with Seb not sure if thats down to her or just that i'm used to being around children.

What’s the hardest thing about being a mum?
Guilt! I think being a mum automatically makes you feel guilty, how you feed, how you wean, if you are doing enough with them, going to work, not going to work and on and on.

What’s the best thing?
The love, cuddles, kisses and the amazingness of watching a tiny baby turn into a little person!

How has it changed you?
I am really happy now. I hated the job i was in pre Seb and used to get a sick feeling everyday before going in. I used to be a total party girl, out every weekend and nights inbetween but i can't remember my last night out and i don't really care!

What do you hope for your children?
I want him to be happy, really simple!!

What do you fear for them?
Nothing really, i'm quite laid back so i will worry about things once they happen.

What makes it all worthwhile?
The smile you get first thing in the morning, the cuddles and sloppy kisses!

As its already mothers day i tag everyone to do this!

Activity: Homemade paints

We all know how our little ones like to taste anything, particularly something they shouldn't be having and it worries alot of us when painting that they will be poorly through eating the paint.
Well worry no more, you can make some paint really easily and it won't make them ill if they eat it(although it probably won't taste that good).

You just need a cup of cornflour, half a cup of cold water, 2 cups of boiling water and some food colouring.
First mix the cornflour and cold water together, then add the boiling water and stir until it turns into a lovely smooth, thick mixture.
Pop into the containers you are using( i used a couple of old tupperware type dishes and a yoghurt pot) and then add a few drops of the food colouring and stir in. Leave to cool and they will thicken to a finger paint type consistancy, i covered mine once cooled and left for a few days and they lasted well just needing a quick stir when i uncovered them.
We took advantage of the sunshine and did our painting outside(no mess inside yay!) Seb isn't to keen on painting on paper yet so i put the paints onto his tray and let him use his fingers and tools to make marks on it.
Ironically Seb didn't try to eat this, not once.

Sebs been shopping

At the weekend we got Seb his first pair of shoes.
I'm quite old fashioned and have waited until he has started walking to get him any shoes, before now its been socks or bare feet.
We went to Clarks but quite frankly the service was appaling(the shoes weren't too pretty either), the woman measured him incorrectly saying he was a whole size bigger then he actually is and the shoes she put on him fell off his feet and she was incredibly rude when i pointed out they were too big. We left with no size for him. I hate slating a company but i was incredibly dissapointed and have emailed to complain(which isn't like me!).
Anyway to cut a long story short he is the proud owner of some lovely Converse lo-tops, i originally wanted the hi-tops but the warmer weather is coming i figured these would be better, the lady in the shop couldn't have been more helpful, she really made sure they fit properly before letting us buy them. Sebs great grandma recently gave him some money to spend on summer clothes rather then buying him Easter eggs or toys and he managed to spend that too.
I'm not usually a fan of slogan tops with monkey/monster etc on but the colour of this top is amazing, really bright(much brighter then the picture) and it came in a set with this cute striped tee.

Set of t-shirts-Debenhams
Mummy had been waiting for these tops to come into stock in H&M, so we snapped them up :)
Grey checked shorts-H&M, i want these in the other colours too :)Ohh and we got more toys, the wooden alphabet blocks are a bit old for Seb but will look fab in his room and the ball drop is his new favourite toy. Both together were £8!
What have you been buying your little one recently?

Posting photos of your children

Some of you will remember a a previous post i did regarding some bath products for Seb. In that post there are photos of him having a lovely time playing in the bath obviously with no clothes on.
This morning i received a comment on the post from another blogger. The comment reads

Quite shocked you have a fully naked picture of you son, with all the word to see or the perverts to copy and paste

This comment got me thinking about putting pictures of our children on our blogs.

Now i appreciate some people aren't comfortable having photos of their children with no clothes on online for hundreds of reasons and that's fine and totally their choice. But i don't mind putting them on, if i was posting nothing but naked photos of my child, yes i could understand someone being shocked but it was a post about bath products!

We have absolutely loads of photos of Seb with no clothes on, i love his squishy little bum and his pot belly and shock horror sometimes i share them!! I am also happy for him to be naked in public(on the beach, swimming pool changing rooms, outside in his paddling pool etc).
From my point of view, nobody can harm my child from viewing a picture on a computer screen, so even if an undesirable happened to find a photo of Seb online nothing is going to happen to him. Paedophiles don't just like looking at naked children, they like looking at children with clothes on too. Interestingly during my degree we had a guest lecturer who worked with paedophiles who actually told us that in fact a paedophile would prefer to see a child dressed as a child. I'm not sure if thats factual or just her findings as its not my area of expertise but i remember it well as it was something i found odd but interesting at the time.

In reality your child is more likely to be harmed by someone they or you know rather then a total stranger either.

I will again say that i understand why some people don't want to put photos up, thats their choice, but mine was to pop those pictures on a relevent post and thats my choice, I appreciate the commenters concern but we all have different viewpoints.

Some news!

Some people may already have guessed this but i can now officially tell the world!
I am pregnant! I've been desperate to tell people since we found out nearly 2 weeks ago but Phils parents have been on holiday and we wanted to tell them first.

Its early days, i am around 6 or 7 weeks gone. I know many choose to wait until 12 weeks but i want to shout it from the rooftops! We have been broody forever and planned to have another once we were married and were going to try from June onwards, so its sooner then expected but we are both very happy. I'm not sure exactly sure how far along i am, as my periods have been very irregular since having Seb, anything from 4 to 8 weeks apart but it looks like i will be around 8 months pregnant when we marry which means finding a new wedding dress(i think i may have found one already).
So far i haven't been anywhere near as ill as i was with Seb, so i'm hoping it stays that way for the next few weeks.

Foodie Friday:Double potato pies

Recipe: Double Potato Pie

This is based on a recipe from the River Cottage Cookbook but i adapted it a bit so its not identical. I would say they are more like a pasty then a pie though!
  • a little oil
  • 1 medium sweet potato
  • 1 medium white potato(i used two as they were tiny!)
  • 1 onion
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 500g puff pastry(either homemade or ready made)
  • a little bit of milk
Chop the potatos and put in a pan of boiling water until cooked. While they are cooking chop the onion and garlic clove and heat in a pan with the oil until softened.
Once the potatoes are cooked, mash them and then mix in the onions and garlic, leave this mixture to one side.
Roll out the pastry on a floured surface, it needs to be rolled quite thinly and then cut out circles for your pies, i used one of Sebs bowls to cut around for ours and it made 6 good sized ones. Place the pastry circles onto a greased baking tray and on one side of the circle put a headed tablespoon of the mixture. Fold other and seal the edges tightly then brush lightly with milk.
Cook in the oven(around 200C) for arond 25-30 mins, until golden brown, allow to cool a bit and serve!
As you can see, Seb had his with some baked beans and sweetcorn(you can put this inside the pies).
These were a hit, we cut Sebs into slices so he could have it as finger food and he munched away. Me and Phil enjoyed ours too.
We had alot of filling left over so kept and used it for mash the next day for Seb.

You can freeze them if you have too many, just pop into the freezer rather then in the oven.

Review: Nordic Naturals Omega 3-DHA

I was recently contacted asking if i would like to try a product from Nordic Naturals.
I've never been somebody who takes a huge amount of supplements but with our wedding drawing nearer i am looking to make sure i am super healthy so that i look and feel my best.

I was sent the Nordict Naturals Omega-3 DHA capsules. There are 60 in the pack and you take 2 a day. These tablets contain fish oil which help support brain, eye and nerve functions and they can also be used to help support a healthy pregnancy. The capsules are strawberry flavoured and so smell lovely when you open the pack and they taste nice, making them easier to swallow then some other capsules.
I'm not going to say that i am a new woman since taking these but i do feel good, knowing i am getting fish oils into my body is a huge boost for me as it is something i have definately been lacking in my diet before.

**This item was sent to me for review, but all opnions are my own**

Find out more about Nordic Naturals and their products here.

Activity: Gloop

Last week we made gloop for the first time.
I've used gloop before but always with older children so i wasn't sure how Seb would take to it so i only made a small amount.
In preparation i put cardboard down on the kitchen floor to take any overspill, please cover your floor if doing this as the cardboard was covered in the end.

Gloop is simple though you do need to play around with the amount of ingrediants. All you need is cornflour, water and if you want to you can add food colouring and glitter. Pop the cornflour into a container(i used a big tupperware tub) then add the water just a bit at a time and mix until you get a lovely thick milkshakey type texture. Then add some colouring and glitter. I used green this time.
Gloop is fun! Put your hands in and you will feel its solid but pick it up and its liquid, a great sensory experience.

I have to say Seb totally amazed me, he played with this for a whole hour and would have carried on but it was getting late and he needed some food and a bath!
He did try eating it a couple of time, shoving his whole face in, but soon learnt it didn't taste to good! This would be fun to do in a paddling pool with LO in, it can also be done in a water tray outside reducing the mess

Don't say no to sex says Gina Ford

Well i had planned a different post for today but i had to write about this!

The guru that is Gina Ford has a new book out and has today made headlines for the advice that women should be showing sexual interest in their partner 4-6 weeks after the birth of a baby.
This advice is given to new mums because essentially their partner may feel left out with a new baby in the relationship and you can read more here.

Now if any mum wants to get back into the swing of things that soon then thats fantastic but really advising others who may not want to be intimate so soon to "grin and bear it" is pretty awful. Those first weeks with a baby are exhausting and any spare time is generally spent sleeping, tidying or getting through the mountain of washing that is building up. Apart from that many women are still suffering physically from after effects of the birth anything from still bleeding, stitches or a sore scar from a c-section. Personally although i recovered well from my section at 6 weeks i was still bleeding and quite frankly i was exhausted and hardly felt sexy.

I can understand a father feeling a little left out when a baby arrives but i wouldn't think much of a man who expected his partner to be sexually active with him when she wasn't ready. Anyway why would a man want to have sex with someone who was just bearing it?

However, I have to say i do agree with her on the point that couples need time together, we are lucky that Seb was a very easy baby so we didn't have to leave him to be able to have a break as he slept well and we could just spend an evening having a cuddle on the sofa while watching a DVD. I'm not sure i could have left my newborn though as she advises as it just goes against what i personally wanted to do although i know others who go on date nights and as long as baby is being well looked after then all is good.

I will say this furore has given her some free publicity though its online, in newpapers and on tv.
What do you think of what Gina Ford has to say?

Activity: Mousse loose about this house

Yes, i know its Moose but for this post Mousse works better.

Yes its another (very) messy play post, two in a week?! I am spoiling you!
Like the jelly post from Sunday this is something we have done a few times and have been doing since Seb was quite young(around 9-10 months).
This gets incredibly messy for us, so cover the floor before you attempt it and make sure you have a bath ready for after.

So what am i using that creates so much mess? Simple, we are using Angel Delight(other brands are available!.
Again its so simple, you just need to mix up the powder with milk, pop it into a container and put on the highchair tray along with some utensils(we used paintbrushes, spoons and a whisk).
This keeps Seb amused for ages, he thinks its hilarious.

Seb enjoys grabbing handfuls of the stuff and closing his first so it squishes out and between his fingers, mixing it with the utensils, shaking his hands with it on them and of course tasting it.

What is this on my hands?I'll try clappingSo all in all its a great sensory activity.

To adapt it for older children you could hide things in the delight for them to find, get them to help make it so they can see it change from powder to pudding and do taste tests with different flavours. You can also do painting onto paper with it but remember to throw away regularly before it goes manky.

Have fun!
