Making magic potions with The Witches!

For World book Day activities Sebastian chose The Witches! We recently read this book together for the second time and when he chose it, i knew exactly what activity I could plan! Making fizzy magic potions of course!

In the book the Grand High Witch makes magic mouse maker to turn children into mice so we had a go at making our own potions using the magic fizzing combination of bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar adding some food colourings and glitter to make it is bit more exciting and potion like.

The boys both absolutely loved doing this, they choose the colours and glitter, helped to add the vinegar and spooned in the bicarbonate of soda. The fact that the reaction is instant means it is perfect for young children, we tested what would happen if we added more of the ingredients, if we stirred the potions, we listened to the fizzing noises which carried on long after the first frothy reaction subsided and finally we mixed the potions together noticing the colour changes and that the reaction started happening again.

It is such a simple science experiment with ingredients that you can buy at the local supermarket but so much fun. I am planning on building a volcano with the boys in summer and will be using this reaction again to produce our lava.
