Evidence shows that learning a second language as a child holds many benefits including improved communication and logic skills. It is something I have been interested in starting with the boys so when One Third Stories asked if we would like to receive a Story Box I was interested to learn more.
One Third Stories is a subscription that takes children aged four to nine on a language learning adventure. Each month your child is sent a story box in the post containing a story book and activities to go alongside it.
The books are really unique, the story begins in English and during the story words are introduced from your chosen language. The second language is used in context so it is clear what the word means. The story then ends in your chosen language. You are also emailed an audiobook of the story which can be listened to before your story box arrives to familiarise yourselves with the language used and pronunciation. There are currently two languages available, French or Spanish
I opted for a French story box to try with the boys. It arrived in gorgeous bright packaging and the boys were excited to see what was inside! We received a book called The Dinosaurs Shoes and sat to read it right away. I was interested to see that Seb and Alex were able to work out what the French words meant due to how they were used within the story. I was also reminded of some French that I had forgotten from school! Alongside the book we received some flashcards with the words from the book, a build your own dinosaur and a separate activity book full of fun tasks to aid the boys learning.
I am really impressed with One Third Stories. It is a great tool to use when learning a second language with children. Seb in particular has enjoyed rereading the story and learning some of the French and I will definitely be looking into building on his interest,
